The Norton Sound Clean Water Program aims to clean debris from the waterways and beaches of Norton Sound that may be
harmful to our waters and our wildlife. The project was initiated due to concern over the number of old nets that were piling up along coastlines, in estuaries and along river banks. In September 2006, a test cleanup was conducted in Unalakleet with funding from both NSEDC and the Marine Conservation Alliance Foundation (MCAF).
Since that initial cleanup, NSEDC has cooperated with MCAF to remove marine debris from areas all around Norton Sound. As of 2010, almost 700,000 pounds of debris have been removed from area waterways. We have conducted cleanups in all of our member communities. Our focus is now shifting to returning to areas where more cleanup work is needed.
In 2011, NSEDC will be conducting cleanups in Savoonga, Koyuk, Wales, Diomede and Nome.
