Clean Water Program
Boat loadThe Norton Sound Clean Water Program aims to clean waterways and beaches of Norton Sound of debris that may be harmful to area waters. The program was initiated by NSEDC after board members expressed concern over the number of old nets that were in and around Norton Sound waters. This program consists of two components: marine debris and freshwater debris.

Debris collectionThe focus of the marine debris cleanup is on improving Norton Sound coastline and floodplains. The marine debris portion of work is in cooperation with the Marine Conservation Alliance Foundation (MCAF). The freshwater debris cleanup focuses is on cleaning Norton Sound area rivers and working to prevent debris from entering the rivers. The freshwater cleanup is funded solely by NSEDC.

Cleanup operations began in 2006 with a small scale test project. To date, cleanup projects have been conducted in the NSEDC member communities of Brevig Mission, Gambell, Golovin, Elim, Koyuk, Little Diomede, St. Michael, Savoonga, Shaktoolik, Teller, Unalakleet, Wales and White Mountain. The program goal is to remove debris from Norton Sound beaches and waterways that may be harmful to area fish and wildlife resources. Cleanup projects are planned for the remaining NSEDC member communities.
