Through the Shoreside Infrastructure Improvements Program NSEDC provides assistance and funding for renovation and new construction of fish processing facilities, dock or harbor facilities, and other infrastructure. NSEDC has invested in shoreside infrastructure throughout the region since 1993.
Program projects have included improvements to the Unalakleet fish processing plant; Shaktoolik, Golovin, Savoonga and Koyuk ice delivery system installations; a small halibut processor in Savoonga; Savoonga beach access improvements; construction of a floating dock in Nome; $500,000 contribution to the Small Boat Harbor Improvements in Nome; construction of the Norton Sound Seafood Center (NSSC) in Nome; $3 million capital contribution to the Nome Harbor Improvements Project; purchase of fish processing equipment in Unalakleet; purchase of processing equipment for the Teller Fish & Meats Processing Plant; and purchase of trailers and equipment for assistance with hauling and launching vessels throughout the region. These projects are all instrumental in supporting salmon, crab and halibut subsistence and commercial fisheries in the Norton Sound region.
In 2005, NSEDC started its Boat Ramp Projects for each member community as a way to improve the efficiency and safety of launching and landing subsistence and commercial fishing vessels in the region. Each member community had the option to accept the boat ramp project or use the allotted funds for a project that was within the scope of the program guidelines - improving efficiency and safety.
The construction of the Cold Storage Facility upgrades at NSSC commenced in early 2007. LCMF, Inc. was retained as the Architectural & Engineering Firm and Alaska Mechanical Inc. was hired as the General Contractor. The facility replaced the previous cold storage system of portable freezer vans with a permanent structure that has freezer space capable of efficiently holding 175,000 pounds of palletized and racked crab, halibut, salmon, cod and other seafood products. In addition to cold storage, the facility also includes a sheltered crab tank room and higher capacity ice making equipment. A dock-side hydraulic powered crane was also installed as part of the project. Each of the sub-components enhance NSSP's red king crab and halibut operations in Nome and allow for potential future expansion.
