Cod and Halibut Satellite Tagging

Pacific halibut and Pacific cod are fished commercially in our member communities of Nome and Savoonga. Despite their significance, little is known about the presence of either species in the Bering Sea. In 2019, NSFR&D and partners embarked on research efforts that utilized satellite tags to investigate the migratory behavior of each species. NSFR&D partnered with the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) to deploy satellite tags on Pacific halibut caught near Nome and Savoonga and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) to tag Pacific cod near Savoonga and on their Northern Bering Sea Trawl Survey. Both research efforts are ongoing.

Preliminary results from the 2019 halibut tagging can be found here.
