NSEDC Board passes additional $575 energy subsidy in response to COVID-19

April 1, 2020 By NSEDC

Supplemental subsidy brings immediate relief to residents responding to economic impact

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and economic burdens associated with the virus, the Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation (NSEDC) Board of Directors approved a supplemental $575 NSEDC Energy Subsidy to each household in NSEDC member communities, bringing total household payments to $1,150. Payments for the initial 2020 NSEDC Energy Subsidy are expected to be made to utility companies next week, quickly followed with the supplemental energy subsidy payment.

“We realize many residents need immediate relief when it comes to economic changes that come with the necessary response to the virus,” NSEDC Board Chairman Frank Katchatag said. “Paperwork for the initial energy subsidy payment is complete after a month-long sign-up process. Providing a supplemental energy subsidy is the most streamlined, efficient way for NSEDC to provide immediate support for our residents.”

The supplemental NSEDC Energy Subsidy will be distributed through a special Community Benefit Share to each municipality that they would in turn utilize to provide the second energy subsidy payment, bringing the total amount distributed to households to more than $3.1 million.
