NSEDC partnered with UAF Northwest Campus and Nome Public Schools to offer adult welding training in Nome this month at the Nome-Beltz High School welding classroom. The development of the training program comes at an opportune time in the region, as demand for workers with technical skills is on the rise. The class runs from June 3 – June 21.
NSEDC received a lot of regional interest in the program, receiving 72 applications, representing 13 of our 15 member communities. NSEDC provided travel and lodging assistance to students from outside Nome, and covered training and supply costs for all 12 student participants. Students are learning the safe use of oxy-fuel cutting and use the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process for fillet welds in the horizontal, vertical up, and overhead positions. Instructors had students visit the recent City of Nome Job Fair, various businesses in Nome, and are inviting employers to discuss possible future employment opportunities. Students who successfully complete the course will earn AWS Structural Welding certifications.
NSEDC extends a thank you to instructors Brian Walsh and Eli Van Ringelenstein for their willingness to share their knowledge and support Norton Sound residents in furthering their skills and pursuing employment opportunities!
NSEDC hopes that providing training in these valuable skills will open the door for students to future training and employment opportunities.
