NSFR&D staff provide the processors and fishers with a variety of information to aid in efficient harvest of Norton Sound herring, including current sea ice movement and densities, herring biomass and migration analysis, exact location of large schools of herring during the fishery, and logistical support regarding permit requirements. Staff fly aerial surveys each spring to ensure that up-to-date information is distributed to the fleet. Norton Sound herring continues to be a small but successful harvest opportunity.
