New program dedicates $1 million for each member community to address vital infrastructure needs
UNALAKLEET—Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation (NSEDC) announces the creation of the Water & Sewer Fund (WSF) which aims to address critical water and sewer needs in Norton Sound communities. At their 2019 2nd Quarter Meetings, the NSEDC Board of Directors approved the availability of $1 million for each member community to be used for upgrades or new construction of water and sewer projects.
Water and sewer issues are among the most critical for NSEDC member communities, impacting the health and welfare of residents, as well as the financial stability of municipalities. Four NSEDC member communities do not have piped water and sewer infrastructure, relying on a central location for potable water. Eleven communities have infrastructure in place, but face costly repair and maintenance projects to expand or keep their systems operational.
“We are tasked with a very clear mission – to provide the Norton Sound region with economic development,” NSEDC Board Chairman Dan Harrelson said. “By providing financial assistance to our member communities through the NSEDC Water & Sewer Fund, we provide communities the means to improve and enhance their quality of life while providing projects and jobs that are essential for healthy communities.”
Approved projects have two years to utilize grant funds. The Water & Sewer Fund is a five-year program that will sunset in 2024. The NSEDC Board may review applications at any quarterly meeting.
“We understand that in today’s financial climate, funding for basic services is limited,” NSEDC Board Member Joe Garnie said. “Teller is one of four communities in the Norton Sound region without sewer and water. Through the Water & Sewer Fund, we show NSEDC’s commitment to the health of our member communities.”
The application period for the Water & Sewer Fund is now open. To be considered at the NSEDC Board of Director’s Third Quarter Meeting in late October, complete applications are due October 15, 2019. The following deadline will be January 15 for applications to be considered at the fourth quarter meetings. Applications can be found at nsedc.com, at an NSEDC office, or from a community liaison.
