The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Pacific Ocean Division announced in late March that it has overturned the Alaska Division’s decision to deny a permit to IPOP, LLC to dredge and mine for gold in the Bonanza Channel estuary east of Nome. In early April, NSEDC joined Solomon Native Corporation, Village of Solomon, Bering Straits Native Corporation, Kawerak, Inc., and Sitnasuak Native Corporation on issuing a written statement in support of protecting the fragile ecosystem in the Bonanza Channel and Safety Sound area.
